Poll: Seventy Percent of Brazilians Believe Lula Should Not Run for President in 2022
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – While the PT (Workers’ Party) dreams of a Fernando Haddad-Lula coalition, a national survey from Paraná Research shows that the ex-president’s unpopularity is still high in Brazil.
For 70 percent of respondents, Lula should not return to the polls in 2022. Those who support his candidacy account for 26 percent, basically the PT’s electoral base in every election.
For 65 percent of respondents, even if Lula runs, he will not be Bolsonaro‘s main rival. Again, the PT’s captive public (30 percent) says he could indeed threaten Bolsonaro’s reelection.
For 64 percent of respondents, the courts – in this case, the Federal Supreme Court, which has an appeal to overturn the leftist’s conviction on the agenda – should not allow the ex-president’s candidacy, after he was arrested and convicted of corruption by the Lava-Jato. Thirty-one percent say that the the courts should indeed allow the leftist to run.
Between September 10th and 12th, the Paraná Researches interviewed 2,008 Brazilians in all the states of the federation. The survey’s degree of reliability is of 95.0 percent, with an estimated error margin of approximately 2.2 percent plus or minus for the overall results.
