“Praia do Futuro” Beach in Ceará Unsuitable for Swimming Because of Oil Slicks

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Oil slicks that have reached the Brazilian northeastern coast have also been detected at Praia do Futuro, one of the most popular destinations for tourists in Ceará State.

The State Environment Agency (SEMACE) released a bulletin to alert bathers about the risks to those who frequent the coast of Ceará.

During the weekly collection of seawater samples to identify the beach’s bathing suitability, SEMACE technicians sighted oil slicks in the east zone of the Fortaleza waterfront.

Last Friday, October 4th, clean-up efforts were conducted at Praia do Futuro. Even so, it is recommended that bathers avoid contact with the oil slick; avoid swimming or other nautical sports in places with red, brown or blue-green stains; and also avoid seafood consumption from these locations.
