Protests in Brazil: Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana occupied by pro-Bolsonaro demonstrators

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The central point of demonstrations in favor of President Jair Bolsonaro, Copacabana Beach, has been occupied by demonstrators on the morning of September 7, Brazil’s Independence Day. The Bolsonarists are concentrated at Posto 5 of the Rio de Janeiro beachfront, in the south zone of Rio de Janeiro.

A crane erects an approximately 12-meter flag on Atlantica Avenue, with sound cars between posts 5 and 4 on Copacabana Beach. The demonstrators wear T-shirts with phrases in favor of Bolsonaro, posters in English and Portuguese criticizing the Supreme Court and its Justices, and supporting the president of the country.

There is a lot of crowding and many people without masks. Ester Iack, 54, university professor. “I hope for peace and that the agendas are achieved and that we have freedom of expression,” she said.

Self-employed Luiz Fernando Oliveira Cruz Lopes, 30, was one of the demonstrators at the act in Rio. For him, the day started early at the door of the Cardeal Arcoverde subway station with the sale of flags.

“I came with 200 flags of Brazil, and I’ve already sold 150, each one costs R$15. I’m with Bolsonaro. I support the peaceful demonstrations,” said the street vendor, who lives in Campo Grande and arrived at the door of the subway station at 7:40 AM.
