Sergipe is Second Brazilian State Granted Oil Slick Emergency Status
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In an ordinance published yesterday, October 15th, in the Federal Gazette, the Ministry of Regional Development (MDR) acknowledged the critical situation and released access to Federal funds through the National Secretariat for Protection and Civil Defense (SEDEC).

With the aid, those municipalities affected by the oil spill will be able to evacuate families from risk areas, finance the collection of contaminated waste, apply for humanitarian assistance kits (food baskets, drinking water, sleeping kits, and others), and recover infrastructure areas affected by the spill.
The emergency funds provided by SEDEC are complementary to the actions of state and municipal governments. Assistance can be requested whenever needed, including in recurring situations.
Other federal bodies are also involved in the containment of slicks and the investigation of the accident.
The National Water Agency (ANA), the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the Ministry of Defense and the three military branches (Navy, Air Force, and Army) are monitoring the magnitude of the spill.
