Strong earthquake hits border between Peru and Brazil on Saturday

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 on the Richter scale struck the border between Brazil and Peru this morning (2).

The seismic tremor was detected by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which says the epicenter occurred 165 kilometers southwest of Tarauacá, Acre.

The earthquake was recorded at a depth of 589.4 kilometers at 9:52 am. Generally, earthquakes of this depth do not usually cause severe damage.

The USGS has only issued a green alert for the earthquake, which means a "low probability of fatalities and damage . . .
