However, the country also has a rich architectural tradition, which reflects the Brazilian culture’s uniqueness. Let us show you seven national streets worth a visit (even if only virtually!).
1. Rua Gonçalo de Carvalho, in Porto Alegre (State of Rio Grande do Sul)
You’ve certainly seen this picture before! This street in the capital of the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul has earned the fame of “the most beautiful in the world” on the Internet. Users were impressed by the green corridor formed by the landscaping along the way. And the fame was such that today this passage is a mandatory stop for tourists in Porto Alegre! Located in the division between the Independência and Floresta neighborhoods, the street was declared a Historical, Cultural, Ecological, and Environmental Heritage in the city in 2006.
2. Rua do Bom Jesus, in Recife (State of Pernambuco)
Another national street that became known worldwide! In 2019, the American publication Architectural Digest listed the 31 most beautiful streets globally, and the only Brazilian representative was Rua do Bom Jesus, in Recife – which, by the way, reached the third position! As if the colorful facades were not enough, the place is rich in history, dating back to the 15th century. The street was also home to the first synagogue built in the Americas, the Kahal Zur Israel.
3. Rua das Pedras, in Búzios (State of Rio de Janeiro)
Walking down this street is almost mandatory for those visiting the tourist city of Búzios, in Rio de Janeiro. In fact, the Rua das Pedras is one of the main tourist attractions in the town – after the beaches, of course. It is known for gathering several restaurants, bars, and stores. Although it is officially only 600 meters long, the region around it ended up being encompassed by the local commerce and transformed the area into the hottest in town.
4. Rua das Flores, in Curitiba (State of Paraná)
Rua das Flores in Curitiba was the first pedestrian-only street in Brazil. Today, it has also become a tourist attraction in the city, bringing together commerce and gastronomy options in an area that became known as “Calçadão da Rua das Flores.”
5. Pituba Street in Itacaré (State of Bahia)
Itacaré is a city much appreciated by surfers, hiking lovers, rafting, or any activity where contact with nature is the main attraction. And Pituba Street is where you’ll find the main inns, rustic bars, and nightclubs, that is, it’s the meeting place for tourists and locals who will spend pleasant moments in the Bahian paradise.
6. Conde de Bobadela Street in Ouro Preto (State of Minas Gerais)
Conde de Bobadela Street is one of the busiest streets in the main historical city of Ouro Preto and has good restaurants, handicraft stores, the Museu da Inconfidência, churches, and other special places. The colonial architecture is a must on tour, and you will certainly walk along the sidewalks unhurriedly, contemplating every detail.
7. Rua do Mucugê in Arraial d’Ajuda (State of Bahia)
Nicknamed “the most charming street in Brazil”, this street enchants mainly for its cobblestone streets and several gastronomy options. At night, the lights create an intimate and romantic atmosphere for the area’s nightlife. On the Trip Advisor platform, the street also won the seal “Traveller’s Choice 2020”.
