RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Last week, the state of Rio registered a rolling average of 142 daily deaths. There was an increase of approximately 34% over two weeks ago.
In the city of Rio, the rolling average for the last 7 days stands at 68 deaths and 1,594 daily cases. As for ICU bed occupancy rate, it currently stands at 65.7% in the state, while the Rio de Janeiro capital registers 85%.
In its last report, Fiocruz alerted to a potential increase in the number of cases in Rio city and to the high bed occupancy rate in the state, which reached 100% in several municipalities.
Among the scientists’ concerns is the spread of the Delta variant in Rio, which is contributing to the high rates. According to the latest survey of Fiocruz’s Corona-Ômic Network, the virus strain was present in 96% of sequenced samples in the municipality and 89.18% of samples collected statewide.
