Ecuador adds 936 cases of Covid-19, totaling 480,720 during the pandemic

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Ecuador added this Friday, July 23, 936 new cases of Covid-19, making a cumulative total of 480,720 infections during the pandemic, whose registration began on February 29 last year, informed the Ministry of Public Health.

The official report indicated that so far, the country has accumulated 21,446 confirmed deaths due to Covid-19, 18 more than on Thursday, in addition to 9,351 “probable deaths” with this disease, which gives a total of 30,797 deaths in the context of the pandemic.

Regarding the situation in the provinces, the report confirmed that the province of Pichincha, whose capital is Quito, remains the most affected, with 174,118 accumulated infections, 398 more than on Thursday.

Pichincha is followed by the province of Guayas, whose capital is the port city of Guayaquil, with 67,416 accumulated infections, 61 of them in the last 24 hours.

Then come the provinces of Manabí (32,671), Azuay (26,413), El Oro (22,517), Loja (17,605), Imbabura (16,040), Tungurahua (15,014), Los Ríos (12,873), Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas (11,873), Cotopaxi (11,797), and Esmeraldas (9,325).

Among the cantons or municipalities, Quito is the city most affected by Covid-19 with 160,925 accumulated infections, 372 new cases in the last day; followed by Guayaquil with 46,224, which is 49 more than the day before.

Ecuador launched last January 21 a national vaccination plan against Covid-19, a period in which it has received more than 13 million doses from international pharmaceutical companies such as the U.S. Pfizer, the Chinese Sinovac, and the British AstraZeneca.

The vaccination plan is progressing at an accelerated pace, as the government of President Guillermo Lasso aims to have 9 million people, or 60% of the population, immunized by the last week of August.
