Covid-19: Ecuador confirms 98 new cases, 492,363 cumulative infections (August 10)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Ecuador on Tuesday registered 98 new Covid-19 cases and reached a total of 492,363 infections during the pandemic, with the first case recorded on February 29 last year, reported the Ministry of Health.

The number of confirmed deaths with the disease increased by only 3, to a total of 22,388 during the pandemic, to which 9,431 “probable deaths” are added, thereby totaling 31,819 fatalities.

Regarding the situation in the provinces, the official report stated that Pichincha, the capital of which is Quito, accumulated the highest number of infections with 180,201 cases (58 more than on Monday); followed by Guayas, the capital of which is Guayaquil, with 68,319 infections (3 more).

Next are provinces such as Manabí (32,965), Azuay (27,234), El Oro (23,102), Loja (17,876), Imbabura (16,588), Tungurahua (15,332), Los Ríos (12,965), Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas (12,015), Cotopaxi (11,937) and Esmeraldas (9,539), among the most affected.

On January 21, Ecuador launched a vaccination plan against Covid-19 and expects to immunize 9 million people, 60% of the population, by late August.

According to the vaccination plan, up to last Sunday, 13,351,482 vaccines had been administered in Ecuador, of which 9,929,240 were first and 3,422,242 were second doses.

In Ecuador, U.S. pharmaceutical company Pfizer, Chinese company Sinovac and British company AstraZeneca’s vaccines are being administered, although the country was also recently supplied with 200,000 single-dose vaccines of Chinese Cansino, which will be administered to people in remote areas with difficult access and to prison inmates.
