Covid-19: Uruguay’s Medical Association says pandemic “under control”, halts daily reports

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – After 17 months and 525 reports, the association announced that it will stop reporting, as Uruguay has “returned to a controlled pandemic scenario.”

“We believe that the goals set have been widely met, so today we will stop doing our daily #COVID19 report,” it wrote on Twitter.

THE “MILESTONES”

The Uruguayan Society of Intensive Care Medicine selected milestones in the development of the pandemic in Uruguay.

The first was recorded on March 10, 2021 when the number of Covid-19 patients admitted to intensive care exceeded 100.

Then, March 27 was the first day with over 40 ICU admissions. Two days later, on March 29, the number of patients in intensive care in Uruguay exceeded 300.

The peak of admissions to ICUs was recorded between April 6 and June 2, when on some days over 50 coronavirus patients were admitted.

On April 12, over 500 Covid-19 patients were admitted to ICUs, with the peak of admissions recorded on April 14: 61 people were admitted to ICUs.

On May 11, 42% of ICUs (in 22 centers) had an occupancy rate of over 85%.

On May 17 the record number of deaths due to coronavirus was reached: 45 people in one day.

June 2 was the peak of ICU admissions in the history of Uruguay, with 62 Covid-19 patients admitted.

And the figures began to change, because August 7 was the first day with no “post-wave” deaths and August 8 was the first day with no admissions to intensive care units.
