Covid-19: Paraguay surpasses 16,000 total deaths while number of cases declines

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Paraguay surpassed 16,000 deaths due to Covid-19 on Monday, although the country, with more than 7 million inhabitants, has been going through a downward curve of cases for more than ten weeks.

In fact, the number of deaths recorded today in the daily report of the Ministry of Health was only 8, in addition to 38 positives, out of 2,289 samples, average figures that have been repeated for days.

With this calculation, the total number of deaths, since the first case was detected in March last year, is 16,003. The accumulated number of positives is 458,992, out of 438,871 recovered, according to the Ministry.

Following this report, the Government announced an extension until September 28 of the measures in force, such as restrictions on traffic in certain morning hours, social events with a maximum of two hundred people, and capacity limitations on religious celebrations in enclosed spaces.

This afternoon also saw the arrival of 173,160 doses of Pfizer vaccine, which will be used for first applications and are part of the 1 million acquired from the American company.

According to the Ministry of Health, with this lot, 511,000 doses of Pfizer vaccine have been received for this purchase, while another purchase of another million doses will arrive in the last quarter of the year.

The objective of the Health Ministry is to vaccinate some 4.7 million of the country’s slightly more than 7 million people.

To date, 2.3 million people have been vaccinated with one dose and 1.8 million with the full schedule, according to the Ministry.
