Argentina’s former president Macri accuses current government of targeting his children

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Former Argentine President Mauricio Macri (2015-2019) published this Sunday, July 4, a letter on Facebook where he says that the current government “seeks revenge” and “targets” his children through the manipulation of Justice in the Correo Argentino case.

“The government seeks revenge. They seek to harm me and target my children. That act is executed through the courts, manipulated by the Treasury Prosecutor, Carlos Zannini. That is what the case of Correo Argentino SA is all about”, the letter begins.

Macri added that with what is happening in this case, “not only the integrity” of his family is at stake, “but also the very idea of justice”.

Correo Argentino, whose main shareholders belong to the former president’s family, is the concessionaire of the postal service that filed for bankruptcy in 2001. Then in 2003, former president Néstor Kirchner (2003-2007) signed a decree that terminated the concession.

The State claims a debt of millions from the company for unpaid royalties, which is the subject of different calculations. During his government, Macri’s officials wanted to ratify a settlement agreement for the debt, but it was rejected by the courts in 2017. Since March 2020, the company has been under judicial administration.

REVENGE AND PERSECUTION

Macri explained in the letter that “the Kirchnerist government rejected all the company’s bankruptcy proposals”, which, he said, always had the approval of the receivers and the support of almost all of its 700 creditors, an “abnormal situation” that was delayed during the last 18 years.

The former president pointed out that recently the shareholders approved the payment of 100% of the debt and its interest, as determined by the courts. However, the government once again rejected this proposal.

He asserts that the government of Alberto Fernández “manifested itself in an even more hostile and illegal manner than the previous governments of Cristina Fernández de Kirchner”, who was president between 2007 and 2015 and assumed as vice-president in 2019.

Prosecutor Zannini, “acting against the interests of the State”, refused to collect 100% of what was owed and demands the bankruptcy of the company, denounced Macri, because if he accepted that the debt was paid, he could not file for bankruptcy, and the prosecutor only wants to file for bankruptcy because Macri’s children were shareholders of the company.

“That is the reason. It is the way to attack them to attack me. This is the truth. It is not justice, it is persecution and revenge”, Macri assured.

MESSAGE TO JUSTICE

Macri recalled that prosecutor Gabriela Boquín rejected all the payment proposals made by Correo Argentino and “only cared about pursuing its bankruptcy”. Hence, he interprets that the prosecutor “does not want the National State to get paid, she wants Correo Argentino to go bankrupt”.

Meanwhile, he pointed out that if Judge Marta Cirulli were to reject the proposal of the total payment of the debt made by Correo Argentino, “it will be a dark historic milestone that will mean the destruction of legal certainty” in Argentina.

And he said that he hopes that Cirulli and the judges María Lilia Díaz Cordero and Matilde Ballerini “realize that they are still in time to stop these outrages”.

“Hopefully, the Commercial Court will not remain in history as a protagonist responsible for having contributed to transforming our beloved country into Argenzuela”, he added, comparing Argentina with Venezuela.
