Nervousness of Bolivian left over alleged threat of coup d’état by right-wingers

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In the face of alleged threats from the Bolivian right-wing opposition in Santa Cruz, 16 leaders of social groups decided to unite to defend a possible coup d’état against the legitimately elected government of Luis Arce.

This was made known by the former president and leader of the Movimiento Al Socialismo (MAS) party, Evo Morales, this Sunday, after the meeting where the social groups came together.

“Faced with threats from the right wing and civic groups of Santa Cruz that say they have a recipe to remove the “dictator” @LuchoXBolivia, 16 executives of national social forces decided to defend our government and democratic revolution,” he published in a message on his Twitter account.

Last Monday, August 9, about 15 social organizations, unions and labor federations held a joint press conference where they denounced the destabilization attempts, and declared a state of emergency in view of the events.

In this sense, the representatives of the Mining Workers Union Federation and the Confederation of Peasant Women reiterated their support to Luis Arce and their willingness to remain united in the face of the “recipes to overthrow governments” indicated by the right wing.

Santa Cruz is a Bolivian department that encompasses the province of Chiquitos where the Chiquitanía area is located, an extensive Bolivian plain that has been devoured by fires in recent days and was also damaged in 2019, where 6.4 million hectares were consumed.
