Carlos Slim’s América Móvil and Chilean Entel authorized to deploy 5G in Peru
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Peru’s Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) authorized América Móvil and Entel to implement 5G services for fixed wireless Internet with the spectrum blocks already assigned to 3.5 GHz. The MTC pledged to provide additional spectrum for operators in 2022.
América Móvil was given the go ahead to provide the service in 111 provinces in different departments and, in a separate resolution, to do the same in the province of Cañete, in Lima. Entel’s authorization includes Americatel and covers the departments of Ancash, Arequipa, Ica, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Piura, Tacna, Lima and the Constitutional province of Callao.
The resolution is based on a prior MTC decision enabling operators with 3.5 GHz assignment to perform technical network modifications and to use spectrum to provide services other than those originally allocated. This as a result of changes in the National Frequency Allocation Plan.
“It is important to encourage the initial deployment of 5G, even more so if we consider that last year Internet data traffic grew more than 60% in the fixed network. This first stage will allow testing the technology,” said Minister Eduardo González, adding that 5G will initially be implemented under the non-standalone standard.
The portfolio pointed out that “it has considered the planning stage of the new spectrum tender in 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz”. The procedure for the new public tender will be defined in March and the award process is expected to occur next year. In recent weeks, Chile delivered spectrum compatible with the technology and Brazil is expected to do the same in June.
