RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The increase in daily infections of covid-19 that began last June in El Salvador is maintained in the first days of August, according to official data.

According to the records of the governmental site covid19.gob.sv, between August 1 and 4, the number of daily official cases was up to 297, similar to those recorded last January.

The figures of the above-mentioned site show an increase in the number of daily reports of infections, which went from 134 cases on June 1 to 291 on August 4.

There was a setback between July 19 and 25, with daily cases again reaching less than 200, but then rising to 297 on August 1.

The country went from registering less than 10 deaths per day to 16 deaths due to covid-19 on July 30 and 14 on July 29, figures that the local press places as the highest so far in 2021.

El Salvador’s Minister of Health, Francisco Alabí, warned about the increase in official cases of covid-19 on July 4.

“We have observed how unfortunately an increase in cases has been generated,” Alabí said, according to statements published by the Salvadoran Government Press Secretariat.

El Salvador registers 88,371 confirmed cases of covid-19, 2,681 died, and the authorities have not indicated the number corresponding to the delta variant.

“It is confirmed in the country (the entry of) the delta variant (…) it has particular characteristics that have been described at international level which facilitate the transmission of this disease,” Alabí said last July 31.

El Salvador has inoculated 4,578,306 doses of vaccines against covid-19, with which 1,612,170 have completed their two-dose schedule.

The Central American country uses vaccines from Moderna, Sinovac, AstraZeneca, Pfizer, and Sinopharm laboratories. The goal of the health authorities is to administer a dose to 4.5 million people by the end of 2021.

In recent days, the authorities have highlighted the increase in the daily vaccination rate, including those over 12 years of age.
