Nicaraguan presidential hopeful arrested upon his return from the U.S.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Nicaraguan opposition presidential hopeful Arturo Cruz was arrested this Saturday at the Augusto C. Sandino International Airport, after he returned from a tour in the United States, he informed the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Cruz, presidential pre-candidate for the opposition Alianza Ciudadana, “is being investigated by the National Police for having strong indications that he has attempted against the Nicaraguan society and the rights of the people”, detailed the Public Prosecutor’s Office, in a press release.

This case comes a few days after the arrest of the Nicaraguan opposition leader Cristiana Chamorro Barrios, for alleged money laundering, and who was disqualified from running in the November presidential elections in which Daniel Ortega is seeking new reelection.
