RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – President of Chile Sebastian Pinera, speaking from the UN Climate Ambition Summit, said on Saturday that the recovery for the economic crisis from the COVID pandemic should be in line with sustainable development.
Pinera said it was a “false dilemma” to choose between economic recovery and sustainable development. He also welcomed the announcement by U.S. President-Elect Joe Biden to rejoin the Paris agreements, although he said Washington needed to do more.

“The U.S. is returning to the Paris Agreement, from which it should have never left and it is great news, but is not enough. We expect that the U.S. will commit to carbon neutrality others have done in the past days and weeks, countries such as China, Japan and Brazil,” said Pinera.
Chile is co-hosting the summit, along with the United Nations, the United Kingdom, France and Italy.
During the event, the world leaders are expected to pledge to increase their efforts to curb the greenhouse gas emissions that fuel global warming.
The Paris accord set a goal for keeping global temperatures from rising above levels that could have devastating consequences for mankind.
