Fire in the north of Chile consumes 35 houses of an encampment

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A fire in the region of Antofagasta, in the north of Chile, consumed a total of 35 houses located in an irregular settlement, according to the National Emergency Office (Onemi).

According to official sources, the flames started during the morning in a camp located in the northern part of the city, 1,500 kilometers from Santiago, and no fatalities were reported.

In total, more than 50 families have been affected so far, and the flames are advancing close to several urban centers in the area, local media reported.

Firefighters and seven Carabineros police corps were deployed to control the fire, which came to support the work with water trucks and various water cannons.
