Spanish company Abertis agrees with Chile on infrastructure investment project in Santiago

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Autopista Central, a high-capacity road belonging to the holding company Vias Chile, a subsidiary of Abertis in that region of South America, signed an agreement with the Government of Chile for the construction of two one-way tunnels (1.5 kilometers each) that will connect the territories within the Metropolitan Area of Santiago.

The total amount of the project will exceed 300 million euros (US$347 million); the works are expected to start in the first half of 2022 and to last for 40 months, the Spanish company informed this Sunday through a statement.

“The agreement represents an important investment aimed at decongesting one of the areas with the most traffic in the north of Santiago de Chile,” the company said.

Specifically, the project refers to the interchange between the General Velásquez section of the Central highway and Américo Vespucio Norte on the Santiago ring road section.

“The project will save fuel and travel time for users of these roads by improving traffic flow and will allow Santiago de Chile to reduce pollution associated with high traffic volumes. In this regard, the project also includes 22 hectares of new public spaces for leisure, of which more than 6 hectares will be for green spaces,” explains the Abertis statement.
