One protester killed in Cuba’s anti-government demonstration

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A man was killed during a clash between protesters and security forces on Monday in a suburb of Havana, reported the Cuban news agency (ACN).

He was a 36-year-old citizen who was participating in a protest that took place yesterday in the Güinera Popular Council in the municipality of Arroyo Naranjo, in the south of the capital, as part of the anti-government demonstrations that began on Sunday in several localities of the island.

In addition to this, several citizens were arrested and others injured in the La Güinera incident, including law enforcement officers, according to ACN.

Monday’s protest in that neighborhood, one of the most depressed areas of Havana, was broadcast in several videos through social networks, even though the government has kept the Internet connection cut since Sunday.

The images only show dozens of people advancing through the streets shouting slogans such as “freedom” or “a united people will never be defeated”.

According to the ACN’s version, the demonstrators “disturbed the order and tried to go towards the National Revolutionary Police Station of the territory, intending to attack its personnel and damage the facility.”
