Death Certificates in Mexico City Triple Official Number of Covid-19 Fatalities
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – According to a report by an independent organization, the Mexican capital issued 4,577 death certificates for the novel coronavirus as a likely or confirmed cause of death, three times more than the official figures.
The Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity (MCCI) organization claims that the official figures for the registry of deaths from Covid-19 in Mexico City are greatly underestimated.

“The MCCI had access to a database and thousands of records. After comparing a representative sample, with 345 cases, on the Civil Registry’s Internet website, we realized that the universe of deaths in that period might have been three times greater than the official figures show,” the organization said in a statement released on Tuesday, May 19th.
According to the investigation, these 4,577 deaths found in the Civil Registry files relate to the period between March 18th and May 12th.
In 3,209 of these cases, Covid-19 is indicated as the probable cause of death and in another 323 cases as the confirmed cause, says the organization.
“On May 12th, the Mexico City government reported 937 deaths from Covid-19, and the federal government registered 123 suspected deaths from the novel coronavirus in the capital,” the organization points out, noting that there is a very large discrepancy between what is officially announced and what has now been detected.
For the investigation, the MCCI connected to a database of 4,577 death certificates registered in seven courts in Mexico City between March 17th and May 12th, 2020.
To validate the discovery, the MCCI took a 345-page sample of records and found that the causes of death described therein were the exact same as those that can be found in the minutes on the Mexico City Directorate General of Civil Registry’s Internet website.
The MCCI says it asked the Mexico City government for a position on the death certificates analyzed for its report and was told by a spokesperson that the data disclosed would be examined.
Mexico has so far recorded 51,633 cases of infection with the novel coronavirus, including 5,332 deaths.
Mexico City, the most affected region in the country, has an official record of 14,566 infections and 1,147 deaths.
