According to INEI, the result of the first month was explained by the lower activity levels in the sectors: transportation and storage (-18.80%); mining and hydrocarbons (-8.49%); accommodation and restaurants (-26.61%); services provided to companies (-8.97%); commerce (-0.85%); and electricity, gas, and water (-0.14%).

On the contrary, other productive sectors experienced an increase, such as finance and insurance (18.66%); manufacturing (6.95%); construction (15.22%); telecommunications (7.03%); fisheries (74.89%); public administration and defense (4.83%); and farming (1.19%).

Construction

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) stressed that the construction sector increased 15.22% —a result reflected in higher domestic cement consumption (21.12%).

Among the private works that continued with their dynamism are condominium and office projects, execution of works at mines, and works in urban development.

Manufacturing production

Likewise, the INEI stressed that manufacturing sector’s production grew 6.95% in January 2020 —mainly explained by the higher activity of the primary (27.52%) and non-primary (0.97%) subsectors.

Agricultural activity

During the analyzed period, the farming sector rose by 1.19% due to growth of the agricultural subsector (2.47%) and the higher levels of harvested areas and the good climatic conditions associated with maximum to normal temperatures on the coast.

Fisheries

The fisheries sector grew 74.89% due to higher capture of maritime origin products (93%), mainly for indirect human consumption (fish meal and oil) having registered a higher catch of anchovy (9,802.52%). It was reflected in the extraction of 517,000 tons versus the 5,000 registered in January 2020.
This greater extraction of the resource was due to the second fishery season started in November last year.

Telecommunications and others

In January of this year, the telecommunications and other information services sector increased 7.03%, supported by the favorable result of the telecommunications subsector (13.56%), which was offset by the decrease in the other information services subsector (-29.98%).
