Alleged Chavismo support for former leftist President Fernando Lugo investigated in Paraguay

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Attorney General of Paraguay, Sandra Quiñónez, and the Secretary of the Secretariat for the Prevention of Money Laundering and Assets, Carlos Arregui, were summoned to a meeting of the Senate Executive Committee on Monday to address a complaint about “alleged Chavista financing of the government of former leftist President Fernando Lugo Méndez.”

This information was published by the newspaper ABC de Paraguay, which assures that the Senate’s plenary last Thursday decided to summon Arregui and Quiñónez for today, Monday, to deal with the testimony of the former intelligence chief of the Venezuelan regime, Hugo “El Pollo” Carvajal, who has said that Hugo Chávez financed leftist governments, including Fernando Lugo (2008-2012).

Carvajal, who is in prison in Spain awaiting extradition to the United States, revealed that the Chavista regime sent millions of dollars to all its allies in the region. He claimed that Lugo received them in Paraguay.

Last Thursday, Senators Enrique Riera (ANR) and Fidel Zavala (PPQ) kicked off the debate in a regular upper house session and proposed convening a meeting.
