RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The President of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, reiterated this Monday (21) to representatives of investment funds and private capital in the United States that his country has “a vocation to open up to the world” both financially and commercially.

According to the Uruguayan Presidency, the President participated in a working breakfast accompanied by the country’s Foreign Minister, Francisco Bustillo, the Minister of Economy and Finance, Azucena Arbeleche, and the Uruguayan Ambassador to the United States, Andrés Durán, where he highlighted, among other things, the value of freedom “as a guiding principle of the government’s policies”.

Likewise, the Presidency emphasizes that Lacalle Pou assured that his country is a bastion of “institutional, political and social stability” and invited people to invest in it since it is a stable and predictable country.

Lacalle Pou’s government has already stated on more than one occasion its intentions to generate trade agreements with different nations and even announced a few days ago that together with China, it will carry out a pre-feasibility study to evaluate the possible signing of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), despite Mercosur’s position that does not allow agreements to be negotiated outside the trading bloc.

The business meeting in New York takes place after Lacalle Pou participated this Saturday in the Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) held in Mexico. He harshly criticized Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela for not having a “full democracy”.

He even had a short exchange with the Cuban President, Miguel Díaz-Canel, which culminated with the Uruguayan leader reciting a verse of the song “Patria y Vida”, which has become an anthem of those who want changes in Cuba.

After the breakfast meeting, the Uruguayan president participated in discussions with the executive director of B’nai B’rith International, Daniel Mariaschin, and with the U.S. special envoy for climate change, John Kerry.

Lacalle Pou is in the United States to participate in the 76th session of the United Nations (UN) Assembly and will be speaking on Wednesday.
