Paraguay “disputes” with Uruguay Latin America’s highest Covid death rate

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Health Surveillance Directorate’s epidemiological projections point to even gloomier days in terms of Covid-19 infections and deaths. The situation in the region is worse than in India, a country that gained international notoriety for its vast population and high mortality rate.

The projection is based on the Our World in Data platform. It states that Paraguay is currently the country with the region’s second highest number of daily deaths per 1 million inhabitants.

The study also notes that Uruguay has reported the region’s highest record, with a daily average of 18.55 deaths per million inhabitants, showing a decreasing trend since mid-April, as did Brazil.

In contrast, Paraguay is showing an increasing trend. Considering the theoretical framework of one of the SEIR-type models (e.g. Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation projections) and empirical data from Uruguay and Brazil, the number of deaths in Paraguay is expected to continue rising. Projections suggest that the country has not yet passed its most critical months.

The country’s daily average of deaths per million inhabitants stands at 13.37 cases. This is four times higher than what was reported at the worst moment of the first wave in week 41 in 2020.
