Argentina Bestows Highest Honor on Uruguay’s Legendary ex-President José Pepe Mujica

A former guerrilla with the Tupamaros, Mujica was imprisoned for 13 years during the military dictatorship in the 1970s and 1980s. Later as President he has been described as “the world’s humblest head of state” due to his austere lifestyle.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - Uruguay's former president, José Pepe Mujica has been granted Argentina's highest honor, the Collar of the San Martin Liberator Order, by the Argentine government. The honor is extended to foreign officials, civilian or military, who in the exercise of their duties merit the highest tribute and acknowledgment in the interests of the Argentine Nation.
