RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A 30-year-old Brazilian woman was found dead last Wednesday, October 2nd, in Arruda dos Vinhos, a district of Lisbon, Portugal.

Camila da Silva’s body was inside a suitcase wrapped in duct tape and was located by a resident who was walking with his dog around the place. According to the Portuguese press, the National Republican Guard confirmed the occurrence.

The next day, on Thursday, October 3rd, the Judiciary Police announced the arrest of the victim’s partner, 38 years old, suspected of having stabbed her to death, with a lethal blow in the house where they lived, and abandoned the body inside the suitcase.

He was caught within a wooded area. The suspect awaits trial.

In Brazil, family members mourned Camila’s death and asked for financial support to carry out the body’s transfer to the country, which costs R$30,000 (US$7.500).

Werleis Silva, Camila’s brother, said in a post on social media that friends and family are mourning and rely on help to enable the transfer.

The mayor of Arruda dos Vinhos, André Santos Rijo, also lamented the young woman’s death and classified the crime as heinous.

“A heinous crime (murder) happened that caught everyone by surprise and shocked an entire community. A young couple of newly arrived Brazilian citizens, who lived in Arruda for about 15 days, in the Urbanization of S. Lázaro. She, a restaurant worker, he, a civil construction worker, and the neighbors had not yet noticed any sign of violence or hostility between them,” he said in the post.

When questioned, Itamaraty (Brazil’s Foreign Office) did not comment on the crime. It noted that when Brazilian citizens die abroad and the family choose to bring their remains to Brazil, the Brazilian embassies and consulates routinely seek to assist the family with general guidance, as well as the issuing of documents and contacting local authorities to try to speed up and facilitate the procedures.

“We note that there is no legal provision that allows for the payment of hospital expenses or transfer of bodies by the federal government,” it said in a statement.

Camila was originally from Ipatinga, in the interior of Minas Gerais. She left a 10-year-old daughter.
