RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Seismological Laboratory of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) registered an earthquake of 5.8 degrees of magnitude on the Richter scale off the coast of the state.

The epicenter was 740 km away from Fernando de Noronha, 1,100 km away from the Potiguar coast and 100 km east of the São Pedro and São Paulo Archipelago.

According to the laboratory, the epicenter was 740 km away from Fernando de Noronha, 1,100 km away from the Potiguar coast and 100 km east of the São Pedro and São Paulo Archipelago.

The event was registered by several worldwide seismographic networks and also by others within the Brazilian network. According to the UFRN laboratory, the quake’s hypocenter had an estimated depth of ten km, and the fault drift occurred vertically without displacement.

Seismic events with this type of motion have no potential to generate tsunamis, emphasizes the note released by the laboratory.
