Amazonas State Reports 342 Teachers Have Covid-19, 20 Days After Return to School

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Twenty days after the return of in-person classes in the state’s high school system, Amazonas records 342 teachers infected with Covid-19, according to the Health Surveillance Foundation. The situation worries parents and teachers in Manaus.

The highest number of cases so far has occurred at the José Bernardino Lindoso State School, with 28 positive cases. Two other schools, Severiano Nunes and Samuel Benchimol, report ten cases each.

“I think the government is trying to show that life is back to normal, hence this urging to keep the schools open. The problem is that a teacher can either infect or be infected,” said Raicele Monteiro, 46, of the Jefferson Peres School.
