The alert was issued out of concern over the threat of a new wave of Covid-19, which would ruin everything that has been achieved so far. Consequently, the market was closed in the early hours of Saturday.

After visiting the Xinfadim market on the same day, 46 people tested positive for the novel coronavirus, although they showed no symptoms. The Chinese government urged all people who visited the market after May 31st to seek out the nearest health care service for testing.

Zhang Yuxi, head of the market, explained that the center supplies 90 percent of the meat, fruits and vegetables Beijing consumes, and distributes to virtually all of the city’s smaller markets. After the positive tests, inspections detected the virus on a fishing board used by a supplier of imported salmon from Norway, which came from the fish market in the Fengtai district, also closed.

After the unfortunate finding, the salmon was removed from large stores like Carrefour, Walmart, as well as the capital’s grocery stores. The city declared a state of “emergency and war,” according to Fengtai official, Chu Junwei.
