Brazil Has Reached Plateau, Should Get Outbreak Under Control, Says W.H.O.
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The World Health Organization (W.H.O.) said yesterday that the epidemiological situation in Brazil is in a plateau stage, but alerts that the number of cases and deaths does not decrease on its own.

“The number of daily cases has stabilized between about 40 and 45,000, we are no longer witnessing the daily increase that occurred between April and May,” said Michael Ryan, the W.H.O. director for emergencies, during the regular press conference on the Covid-19 pandemic in the world.
According to the expert, between mid-June and July, the epidemiological situation in Brazil seems to have stabilized in what he called the plateau.
However, Michael Ryan warned that the number of cases and deaths has not yet begun to decrease systematically, stressing that “there is absolutely no guarantee that they will decrease on their own.”
The epidemiologist also added that the current moment is an opportunity for Brazil to take control of the country’s epidemiological situation, calling for concerted and sustained action.
“So far, in many countries, including Brazil, it is the virus that is in charge, it is the virus that defines the rules. We are the ones who have to define the rules for the virus and there is an opportunity here to lead the transmission of the virus in a downward trajectory,” he stressed.
Currently, Brazil is the country with the second-highest number of cases and deaths, after the United States, totaling 76,688 fatalities and over 2 million infections.
On Thursday, the country recorded 45,403 new cases of the disease and 1,322 deaths, according to information released by the Ministry of Health.
