Brazil Passes 169,000 Covid-19 Deaths (November 21st)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The media outlet consortium released a new survey of the coronavirus pandemic situation in Brazil based on data from state Health Secretariats, consolidated at 8 PM on Saturday, November 21st.

The country recorded 354 Covid-19 deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 169,016 fatalities since the start of the pandemic. As a result, the rolling average of deaths in Brazil over the past seven days stood at 478. This was a +47 percent variation compared to the average of 14 days ago, suggesting an upward trend in Covid deaths.

In terms of confirmed cases, 6,052,143 Brazilians have either been or are infected with the novel coronavirus since the start of the pandemic, with 34,538 of these confirmed on Friday. The rolling average for the past seven days was 29,149 new daily diagnoses, a variation of +76 percent over the cases recorded two weeks ago.

Nine states showed an increase in the rolling average of deaths: Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Goiás, Amapá, and Roraima.

It is worth recalling that a problem occurred in the Ministry of Health’s national system of Covid-19 death and case register, which began on November 6th. Several states reported difficulties in accessing the e-SUS and either disclosed incomplete data or failed to provide daily updates for a few days. This was the case of São Paulo, the state most affected by the pandemic in absolute figures, which had no recorded deaths for five consecutive days.

Over the coming days, this failure to update and these incomplete figures will be reflected in the percentages showing an upward, stable or downward trend in deaths in the affected states that week, and consequently also in the percentages for the national trend in deaths and new diagnoses.

There are states in which the low average number of deaths could lead to large percentage variations. The rolling average data are, in general, in decimal numbers and rounded to ease the presentation of data.
