Brazil records 2,216 Covid deaths and has highest moving average in nine days (June 11)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil has registered 2,216 deaths and 85,149 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, according to data released Friday, June 11, by the National Council of Health Secretaries (Conass).

With the new update, the country now has 484,235 deaths and 17,296,118 infected by the new coronavirus; data that make Brazil the second most affected country in the world in terms of deaths and the third in terms of cases, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Thursday’s moving daily average of deaths is 1,913, the highest number in the past nine days. The index shows the average number of deaths from the disease in each of the past seven days.

Six Brazilian states have already reached the 1 million Covid-19 infected mark: São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Bahia, and Santa Catarina; the latter passed the mark this Friday, reaching 1,002,008 cases of the disease.

Rio de Janeiro is the state with the second-highest number of deaths, with 52,000 deaths, behind São Paulo, which totals 116,000 deaths from Covid-19.

Anvisa approves vaccine for children 12 years and older

This Friday, the National Health Regulatory Agency (Anvisa) approved Pfizer’s vaccine for use in children 12 years and older. As a result, the vaccine’s package insert for Brazil now indicates this new age group.

Previously, the vaccine was approved for people 16 years of age and older. Until now, this is the only vaccine approved in Brazil for people under 18 years of age.

The use of the vaccine for people over 12 years of age had already been approved by the FDA, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
