Brazil Records 3.6 Million Covid-19 Cases, 114,700 Deaths (August 23rd)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Ministry of Health reported on Sunday, August 23rd, that Brazil totals 3,605,783 confirmed Covid-19 cases since the start of the pandemic.

Between Saturday, August 22nd, and Sunday, further 23,421 people diagnosed with the novel coronavirus were reported by the State and Municipal Health Secretariats. The total number of deaths from the disease stands at 114,744, with 494 recorded in the past 24 hours.

Statistics are lower on Sundays and Mondays due to challenges in recording data by Health Secretariats on weekends. On Tuesdays, on the other hand, there is a trend towards higher figures due to the backlog of records sent to the Ministry of Health’s system.

The Ministry of Health’s update also reported 752,004 people in follow-up and another 2,739,035 who have already recovered from the illness.

The lethality rate (number of deaths by the total of cases) stood at 3.2 percent. The mortality rate (number of deaths per 100,000 inhabitants) reached 54.6. The incidence of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 inhabitants stands at 1715.8.

Covid-19 in the states

The states with the highest number of deaths are São Paulo (28,467), Rio de Janeiro (15,292), Ceará (8,289), Pernambuco (7,390), and Pará (6,057). The states with the fewest deaths are Roraima (579), Tocantins (585), Acre (600), Amapá (631), and Mato Grosso do Sul (738).

In terms of confirmed cases, São Paulo (754,129) also ranks first, followed by Bahia (236,050), Rio de Janeiro (210,948), Ceará (205,441), Minas Gerais (194,614), and Pará (189,289). The states with the lowest number of recorded cases are Acre (23,719), Amapá (41,120), Roraima (41,730), Mato Grosso do Sul (42,498), Tocantins (43,596), and Rondônia (51,421).
