Brazil Records 656 Deaths in 24 Hours; Infections Exceed 1.6 Million (July 6th)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil recorded 656 deaths and 21,486 infections with the novel coronavirus in the balance released by the media outlet consortium at 1 PM on Monday, July 6th, exceeding a total of 65,000 deaths from the disease.

In all, 65,556 lives have been lost to Covid-19 and 1,626,071 people have been infected by the disease since the outbreak of the pandemic, according to data from a survey conducted by Estadão, G1, O Globo, Extra, Folha and UOL with the state Health Secretariats.

Since the social isolation and distancing rules have been relaxed amid the pandemic, at least 12 Brazilian state capitals have seen their infection rates increase. In São Paulo, the reopening of the economy under the São Paulo Plan has also led to more deaths and the highest number of fatalities in the last half of June. On Sunday, July 5th, the state passed the 320,000 infections and 16,000 deaths mark, but in the last few days the numbers have slowed down.

Rio de Janeiro follows São Paulo on the list of most affected states, with 10,698 deaths from the disease and over 101,554 confirmed cases. The state recorded 31 deaths from covid-19 and 587 new cases of the disease within 24 hours.

On Monday evening, July 6th, Brazil’s Health Ministry reported that Brazil counted 620 deaths and another 20,229 infections with the novel coronavirus. As a result, the country recorded a total of 65,487 deaths and 1,623,284 confirmed cases of coronavirus, according to the Ministry. This figure is slightly different from that compiled by the media consortium, primarily due to the time of data collection.

Brazil has the world’s second-largest covid-19 case and death rate, behind only the United States, which has 2.8 million confirmed infections and 129,700 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.
