Brazil Records Highest Daily Covid-19 Death Figure in Past Five Months (January 8th)
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – There was significant growth in the number of deaths by Covid recorded. According to the media outlet consortium’s updated balance, between Thursday and Friday, January 7th and 8th, there were 1,379 deaths – the highest number since August 4th. A total of 201,542 people have already lost their lives in the pandemic.
Brazil has passed the eight million cases mark; it is now 8,015,920 – 84,977 recorded in the past 24 hours. This is the highest daily figure since the media consortium began disclosing data in July.
These figures are influenced by Paraná State, which on Friday released late data from Thursday when the state failed to publish its report. Moreover, Paraná reviewed its figures and included more records from other months.
Thus, after 17 days, the case average rose again, with a significant increase of 26% compared to two weeks ago. Brazil is registering 45,294 new cases per day on average.
With respect to the average number of deaths, Brazil had not recorded such a high average since September 2nd. It currently stands at 872 deaths per day, 37% more than 14 days ago.
Epidemiologist Pedro Hallal, from the Federal University of Pelotas, says that despite the review by the state of Paraná, the figures are still high. And this significant increase is a reflection of the lack of control and crowds at end-of-year parties, particularly over Christmas, a situation that experts had alerted to in December, according to him.
The number of states recording a surge in deaths has increased. On Friday there were 15 states and the Federal District: Acre, Amazonas, Rondônia, Roraima, Amapá, Tocantins, Ceará, Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte, Sergipe, Goiás, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Paraná, and Rio Grande do Sul. The largest increases were found in Roraima (+500%) and in Amazonas (+230%).
There are 11 states in the so-called stability, with no significant increase or decrease: Pará, Alagoas, Bahia, Maranhão, Pernambuco, Piauí, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo and Santa Catarina.
Unfortunately, there is no state with a drop in the average number of deaths.
