Brazil Records Two Million Covid Cases, Highest Death Toll in Month: 1,322 (July 16th)
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Over the past 24 hours, the Ministry of Health has added 45,403 additional records of coronavirus infection in Brazil. As a result, the country has passed the two million Covid-19 infections mark since the start of the pandemic. The total number of infections is now 2,012,151.
The portfolio also counted 1,322 new deaths between Wednesday and Thursday with the cumulative number of victims reaching 76,688 throughout the country. It was the worst day in July, with the highest death record in 24 hours since June 23rd, when the Ministry added 1,374 deaths to the official toll. The month’s preceding record had been recorded on Tuesday, July 14th, when 1,300 deaths were added.
The federal government also reported that Brazil currently has 639,135 patients in follow-up. Another 1,296,328 cases have recovered from the disease.
Deaths in general increase in Brazil
The pandemic is having a clear impact on death statistics in Brazil. In the first half of this year, 667,258 deaths were recorded in Brazilian registries, involving all types of natural and external causes. In comparison, 608,265 deaths occurred in the first semester of 2019, reports Diogo Schelp’s column.
That is, in the first six months of 2020 there was an increase of 9.7 percent in total deaths compared to the same period last year.
In absolute numbers, 58,993 more deaths were recorded in 2020 than in the first half of 2019. In the same period in 2020, notaries recorded 62,074 confirmed or suspected Covid-19 deaths – a cause of death that did not exist in 2019.
