Brazil Records Its Most Deadly Sunday for Covid-19 on July 19th

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On July 19th, Brazil recorded the deadliest Sunday for Covid-19 in a 24 hour period, according to data from the Ministry of Health. There were 716 deaths according to the government’s official bulletin.

The increase may be partially explained by a backlog resulting from Saturday’s data blackout in Rio de Janeiro, which accumulated the Saturday and Sunday figures. There are now 79,488 deaths in total.

Before that, the highest deaths on a Sunday in the country had been on June 21st, when the government counted 641 deaths.

The number of cases stands at 2,098,389, according to the ministry. Over the past 24 hours, the country detected 23,529 new infections since Saturday’s report. Brazil counts 1,371,229 patients recovered, while over 647,000 are still under follow-up.

Rio de Janeiro releases data after blackout

After a day of data blackout, Rio counted 195 deaths and 3,294 Covid-19 infections over the past 48 hours. As a result, the state now totals 12,114 deaths and 138,525 confirmed cases.

There are a further 1,172 deaths under investigation. To date, 117,262 patients have recovered from the disease. The Rio State Health Secretariat (SES) said the “blackout”, which prevented the release of data related to the pandemic on Saturday, is related to an instability in the official reporting systems, which compromised the accounting of records.

The city of Rio currently counts 7,703 deaths from Covid-19, the equivalent of 64 percent of the cases recorded in the state. São Gonçalo, in the metropolitan region, ranks second in the number of deaths, with 551 cases, followed by Rio suburbs Duque de Caxias (493), Nova Iguaçu (391) and São João de Meriti (274). The Rio de Janeiro capital counts 66,909 infections, followed by Niterói (7,725), São Gonçalo (6,927), Nova Iguaçu (3,759), and Duque de Caxias (3,707).
