Chilean study recommends third Coronavac vaccine dose after 6 months

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Scientists in the final trials on the real effects of the Coronavac vaccine in the Chilean population report that it is effective, but recommend a third dose approximately six months after initial immunization.

“Our results show that six months after vaccination, neutralizing antibodies and specific T-lymphocytes are still detected in the blood of vaccinated individuals, but levels are lower compared to what is observed four weeks after the second dose.”

“Given the presence of variants that require a higher level of neutralizing antibodies to block virus entry and possibly symptomatic disease, it seems advisable to administer booster doses from the sixth month after the first dose to enhance the amount of circulating neutralizing antibodies,” the research report reads.

The study’s positive finding is that “only 2% of fully vaccinated volunteers developed Covid-19. This means that 98% of individuals vaccinated with the full regimen did not develop symptomatic Covid-19,” the report concludes.
