Rio City Hall Fines 11 Bars and Restaurants in Leblon Neighborhood for Crowding

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Dias Ferreira Street, in Leblon, South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, continues to disregard health regulations to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus. This weekend, the City Hall fined 11 different food and beverage establishments located on the popular night life road.

The fines for crowding and operation in violation of Covid-19 prevention regulations were imposed by the Municipal Public Order Secretariat (SEOP) between Friday night and Sunday morning.

According to the City Hall, a task force was set up involving officers from the Undersecretariat of Operations (SUBOP) and the coordinator of trailers from SEOP, with the assistance of municipal officers and inspectors from the Municipal Treasury Secretariat.

Street vendors

In addition to the bars and restaurants in Leblon, the officers also inspected the itinerant street vendors. A total of 140 items were seized, including alcoholic beverages. In addition, 34 traffic violations were applied, with two vehicles removed for irregular parking.

In an inspection conducted during the day, the operation seized 618 items from irregular street vendors operating in Copacabana on Saturday alone. Among the products seized were drinks, bags, four carts and trolleys, two televisions, a heater, an exhaust fan, a cooler and a Styrofoam box.

Two street vendors were fined and another 25 were instruct to vacate the public area. About 150 kilos of fruit were also seized and donated to a charity.

In traffic, 60 additional transport vehicles were fined, and two cars were removed for irregular parking.

COMLURB also collected 450 kilos of garbage, and a citizen was fined for not wearing a mask.
