Colombia starts June with a record 25,966 Covid-19 infections in 24 hours (June 1)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Colombia started June with a new record of 25,966 new Covid-19 infections on the day it surpassed the 10 million vaccines applied, the Ministry of Health reported on Tuesday.

According to health authorities, the country, which is in the middle of the third peak of the pandemic, accumulates 3,432,422 infected and 89,297 deaths after the 523 reported today.

According to data from the Ministry of Health, Colombia closed May, the deadliest month since the beginning of the pandemic, with 3,406,456 infected and 88,774 deaths.

Of the total number of cases confirmed today, 138,634 remain active, equivalent to 4.03%.

Bogotá, with a high rate of infection, again registered the highest number of new infections today, with 5,997 positive cases, followed by Cundinamarca (2,707), Antioquia (2,492), Bolivar (2,132), Valle del Cauca (1,502), Santander (1,373), Boyaca (960) and Cesar (793).

Thus, the Colombian capital is also the city with the highest number of positive cases since the beginning of the pandemic, with 971,881, followed by Antioquia (544,088), Atlántico (273,193), Valle del Cauca (270,049), Cundinamarca (166,710), Santander (135,447) and Bolívar (104,757).

According to health authorities, of the 523 deaths registered this Tuesday, 454 correspond to previous days.

Bogotá also had the highest number of deaths, with 123, followed by Antioquia and Cundinamarca (54); Valle del Cauca (48), Santander (40), Huila (21), Bolivar (18), Atlántico and Magdalena (17); Nariño and Sucre (16); Boyaca (15), Tolima (13), Cesar (12) and Caldas (9).

Today, 90,698 samples were processed in the country, 48,133 of them of the PCR type and 42,565 antigens, for a total of 17.09 million tests performed.

Vaccination in Colombia has picked up pace in recent days, and this Monday, 266,350 doses were administered (19,392-second applications). In total, 10,092,122 vaccines have been applied, of which 3,293,247 are people with full doses.

The Colombian government aims to vaccinate 35.2 million people this year, equivalent to 70% of the national population. So far, 9.3% of this target has been fully vaccinated, which rises to 28.6% if those who have received only one dose are taken into account.
