Covid-19: 4 states accounted for 40% of last week’s cases in Brazil
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Over last week (between April 9th and 15th), Brazil registered 555,390 new Covid-19 cases and 26,161 deaths, according to a survey conducted by VEJA based on data published by the Ministry of Health. Of these, about 41% were reported in four states: São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Ceará, and Rio Grande do Sul.
São Paulo alone, the most populous state in Brazil, accounted for 19.2% of cases and 22.1% of confirmed deaths in the country last week.
Second placed is Minas Gerais, with 11.7% of the number of cases and 8.8% of deaths, followed by Rio Grande do Sul, with 5.6% of cases and 4.8% of deaths. Ceará is fourth, with 4.4% of cases and 2.25% of confirmed deaths.
The bottom of the list is dominated by states from the North and one from the Northeast: Roraima – the state accounted for only 0.3% of cases last week -, Acre (0.4%), Tocantins (0.8%) and Alagoas (0.89%). In terms of deaths, the states that contributed less to the figure registered last week were Roraima (0.1%), Acre (0.2%) and Amapá (0.3%).
