Covid-19: Brazil Counts 108,500 Deaths, 3.35 Million Cumulative Cases (August 17th)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil has now recorded 108,536 deaths from the novel coronavirus pandemic. The number was released during the Ministry of Health’s daily update.

In the past 24 hours, 684 new deaths were registered. On Sunday, August 16th, there were 107,852 deaths in the system. One week ago, it was 101,752. There are a further 3,454 deaths under investigation.

The number of cumulative cases has risen to 3,359,570. In the past 24 hours, a further 19,373 infections have been added to the statistics by local health authorities. On Sunday, the panel marked 3,340,197 people infected since the start of the pandemic. Seven days ago, the sum was 3,057,470.

Statistics are lower on Sundays and Mondays due to the Health Secretariat’s challenges in feeding data on weekends. However, on Tuesdays the figures tend to be higher due to the records backlog sent to the Ministry of Health’s system.

The balance also included 772,540 people in follow-up and 2,478,494 recovered. The lethality (deaths as a percentage of cases) stood at 3.2 percent. The mortality (number of deaths per 100,000 inhabitants) stood at 51.6. The incidence of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 inhabitants rose to 1,598.7.

States

The states with the highest number of deaths are São Paulo (26,899), Rio de Janeiro (14,566), Ceará (8,163), Pernambuco (7,210), and Pará (5,945). The states with the fewest deaths are Tocantins (516), Roraima (568), Acre (582), Amapá (617), and Mato Grosso do Sul (640).
