Covid-19: Brazil Counts 139,000 Deaths and 4.65 Million Cumulative Cases

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The number of people infected with the novel coronavirus since the start of the pandemic has risen to 4,657,702. In the past 24 hours, 32,817 new positive Covid-19 diagnoses have been recorded. By Wednesday, the total stood at 4,624,885.

The data were released by the Ministry of Health early on Thursday evening, September 24th, in the daily update published by the portfolio.

Still according to the bulletin, the cumulative number of deaths from the pandemic reached 139,808. Between Wednesday and Thursday, the new deaths recorded by the state Health Secretariats totaled 831, maintaining the average below the daily 1,000 of recent weeks. On Wednesday, the Ministry of Health’s system counted 138,977 lives lost since the start of the pandemic.

Health authorities are still investigating whether 2,422 deaths occurred as a result of Covid-19.

Still according to the update, 494,105 patients are under follow-up. The number of patients who have recovered from Covid-19 stands at 4,023,789. This represents 86.4 percent of the total number of infections with the novel coronavirus.

São Paulo passes 958 thousand coronavirus cases

According to the balance released yesterday by the state Health Secretariat, the state of São Paulo totals 958,240 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus, with 34,677 deaths since the start of the pandemic. In the past few hours alone, the state has added 185 deaths and 6,267 new cases.

From the total diagnosed cases, 821,045 people have recovered from the disease.

There are 9,310 patients hospitalized throughout the state with suspected or confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus, 4,017 of them in critical condition. The intensive care unit (ICU) bed occupancy rate in the state stands at 46.7 percent and at 45.8 percent in Greater São Paulo.

Other states

Rio de Janeiro is the state with the second-highest number of Covid-19 deaths, with 18,037. Next come Ceará (8,882), Pernambuco (8,110), and Minas Gerais (6,983).

The states with fewest deaths are Roraima (635), Acre (653), Amapá (698), Tocantins (901), and Mato Grosso do Sul (1,217).
