Covid-19: Brazil Counts 46,500 Deaths and 955,300 Confirmed Cases (June 17th)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil recorded 1,269 new deaths from Covid-19 in the previous 24 hours, according to an update by the Ministry of Health released yesterday, June 17th. With these additions to the statistics, the country now totals 46,510 deaths from the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The report also included 32,188 new cases of the disease, totaling 955,377, and should reach the one million mark of infections by the end of this week.

The daily update shows an increase of 2.8 percent in the number of deaths compared to Tuesday, June 16th, when the total was 45,241. The growth in confirmed cases showed an increase of 3.4 percent over Tuesday’s figure when the Ministry of Health reported 923,189 infections.

Of the total confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Brazil, 445,393 patients are still under observation and 463,474 have recovered. There are still 4,033 deaths under investigation to determine if they were caused by Covid-19.

The lethality rate (number of deaths divided by the total of cases) stood at 4.9 percent. The mortality rate (deaths per 100,000 inhabitants) stood at 22.1. The incidence (confirmed cases per 100,000 inhabitants) was 454.6.

The states with the highest number of deaths are São Paulo (11,521), Rio de Janeiro (8,138), Ceará (5,282), Pará (4,350), and Pernambuco (4,009). Other states with high death rates due to the pandemic include Amazonas (2,579), Maranhão (1,570), Bahia (1,222), Espírito Santo (1,169), Alagoas (811), and Paraíba (696).

The states with the highest number of confirmed Covid-19 cases are São Paulo (191,517), Rio de Janeiro (86,963), Ceará (84,967), Pará (74,192), and Maranhão (64,735).
