Covid-19: Brazil Records 154,000 Deaths and 5.27 Million Cumulative Cases (October 20th)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil has reached 154,837 Covid-19 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health’s report released on Tuesday evening, October 20th. A total of 661 new deaths were recorded in 24 hours. On Monday, the health authorities recorded 154,176 deaths from Covid-19. There are also 2,419 deaths under investigation.

The number of cases since the start of the novel coronavirus pandemic has reached 5,273,954. Between Monday and Tuesday, the state Health Secretariats added 23,227 new positive diagnoses to the statistics. By Monday, the Ministry of Health’s system included 5,250,727 cumulative cases of the disease.

There are currently 397,524 patients in follow-up. According to the Ministry of Health, 4,721,593 people have already recovered from the disease.

São Paulo totals over 1.068 million coronavirus cases

With 211 new deaths and 4,923 new confirmed cases, the state of São Paulo currently totals 38,246 deaths and 1,068,962 cases of the novel coronavirus. Among the diagnosed cases, 959,087 people have already recovered from the disease.

The state currently counts 7,296 people hospitalized for suspected or confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus. Of this total, 3,196 people are hospitalized in a critical condition. The intensive care unit (ICU) bed occupancy rate stands at 40.7 percent in the state and 40.5 percent in Greater São Paulo.

Covid-19 in other states

Following São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro is the state with the highest number of deaths by Covid-19, 19,836. Next come Ceará (9,218), Pernambuco (8,505), and Minas Gerais (8,483). The figures for Minas Gerais have moved it close to the state of Pernambuco and makes it likely to become the fourth-highest in number of deaths in the the coming weeks.

The states with fewest cases are Acre (682), Roraima (686), Amapá (734), Tocantins (1,055), and Mato Grosso do Sul (1,512).
