RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Rio de Janeiro passed China in the number of deaths by Covid-19. The state reports 4,856 deaths from the disease, according to a State Health Secretariat bulletin updated yesterday afternoon.

The Asian country records 4,638 deaths from the novel coronavirus, according to data from the Johns Hopkins University panel. There have been 251 new confirmed deaths in the state in the last 24 hours.

The state now has 44,886 confirmed cases of the disease. There are still 1,286 deaths under investigation and 259 have been ruled out. To date, 31,934 confirmed cases have recovered from the disease.

The Health Secretariat clarifies that the cases and deaths recorded in the report did not occur in the last 24 hours. In recent weeks, the testing capacity of Noel Nutels Central Laboratory (Lacen) and partner laboratories has doubled, from 900 to up to 1,800 samples analyzed daily, so the rise is partially attributable to overcoming the test backlog.

Cases and deaths can also be confirmed by clinical-laboratorial criteria, or by tests in qualified private laboratories.
