RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The number of people who died in El Salvador due to covid-19, from mid-March 2020 to May 25, 2021, increased to 2,229, with 5 more deaths registered on Tuesday, according to official data updated on Wednesday.
According to the Ministry of Health (Minsal) information, the new deaths correspond to 4 men, whose ages range between 50 and 80 years, and one woman over 50 years.

Between January 2 of this year and mid-March -the last update of the death data in 2021- more than 600 deaths from covid-19 were reported, compared to the 1,343 deaths reported between mid-March 2020 (when the pandemic broke out) and December 31 of that year.
Meanwhile, the number of coronavirus infections is 72,821, and the highest number of positives is recorded in people between 20 and 39 years of age, with 29,857 cases.
This is followed by the 40 to 59 age group, with 27,878 infections, and then the 60 to 79 age group, with 9,570 people.
El Salvador’s authorities received a new batch of 96,000 vaccines against the coronavirus from the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, which now totals 2,791,080 doses.
Since February 17, when the immunization process began in the country, front-line health workers, people over 60 years old, people over 55 years old, teachers, police, military, firefighters, civil protection personnel, and journalists have already been vaccinated.
The Minister of Health, Francisco Alabí, said in a recent interview that he expects that in 2021 the process of applying the first dose of the vaccine against covid-19 to 4.5 million inhabitants, which represents 70% of the population and with which he seeks to achieve herd immunity, will be completed.
