Latin American Coronavirus Cases Now Surpass Those of US and Canada Together

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Cases of coronavirus in Latin America have exceeded the total combined infections in the United States and Canada for the first time, amid the wave of outbreaks in Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Colombia and Argentina, showed a Reuters survey released on Sunday.

The growing number of cases makes Latin America the most impacted region by the pandemic worldwide, with 26.83 percent of global cases.

Currently, Latin America is home to 4,327,160 novel coronavirus cases in total, compared to 4,308,495 infections in the United States and Canada, according to a count based on data provided by each country’s government.

The United States continues to be the country with the highest number of infections and deaths from COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the virus, with over 4.2 million cases and approximately 146,000 deaths, followed by Brazil, with 2.4 million cases and almost 87,000 deaths.

Mexico, Peru and Chile are also among the 10 countries with the most cases of COVID-19.

According to a Reuters survey, the number of people infected by Covid-19 worldwide exceeds 16.1 million.

Health experts said official data almost certainly underreport infections and deaths, particularly in countries with limited testing capacity.
