Mexico reports 50 new deaths from Covid-19, the lowest figure since 2020 (May 22)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Mexican government recorded 50 new deaths from Covid-19 on May 22, the lowest figure since April 2020, to total 221,647 deaths, the Ministry of Health (SSa) reported Sunday.

In the daily technical report, the SSa also registered 1,274 infections, bringing the number of confirmed cases to 2,396,604, the Health Ministry reported on Saturday.

With these data, Mexico ranks as the country in the world with the fourth-most deaths, behind the United States, Brazil, and India, and fifteenth in number of confirmed infections, according to the Johns Hopkins University count.

Just last Monday, the SSa reported only 52 deaths per day, the lowest figure of the year so far.

However, according to the government itself, the total number of deaths could be higher. The April update of the “Excess Mortality in Mexico” reported that deaths associated with Covid-19 are just over 332,500 after an analysis of death certificates.

The daily technical report documents an estimated number of cases of 2,582,573 when considering those awaiting test results, among which there are an estimated 18,074 active cases, or less than 1%, who have presented symptoms in the last 14 days.

The average occupancy of general beds in Mexican hospitals is 10% and 13% for intensive care beds with ventilators. Hospital occupancy had decreased by 87% compared to the peak reached in January, when hospitals in several cities were saturated, especially in the capital.

With regard to deaths, Mexico City, the focus of the pandemic, accounts for almost one in five deaths nationwide.

The Health report recalled that the epidemiological traffic light for the next two weeks places 16 of Mexico’s 32 states in green (low risk), 15 in yellow (medium risk), and one in orange (high risk).

VACCINATION PLAN

In a virtual conference, the general director of Epidemiology, José Luis Alomía, detailed that so far, they have administered 26,478,866 doses of the vaccine against covid-19 with 323,429 injections in the last day.

In addition, 11,784,494 people have received the necessary doses of the CanSino single-dose drug to complete the vaccination schedule.

The government has promised to vaccinate an average of 500,000 people per day so that the Mexican population over 18 years of age will be immunized by October.

The inoculation program currently targets adults over 50 years of age, pregnant women, medical personnel, and educational personnel.

Since December 23, 33,469,715 doses have been received from five pharmaceutical companies.

Mexico, with 126 million inhabitants, has committed 34.4 million doses from the American Pfizer, 79.4 million from the Anglo-Swedish AstraZeneca, 35 million from the Chinese CanSino, 24 million from the Russian Sputnik V, 20 million from the Chinese Sinovac, 12 million from the Chinese Sinopharm and 51.4 million from the Covax platform.
